The autumn and winter 2026 forecasts from the international beauty desks are out, and they agree to an unusual degree: the season is warm, deep and markedly less grey than the last few winters have been.
How much of it actually reaches the chair in Vienna will not be settled until October. But the direction is clear enough to talk about.
Brown is the colour of the season
Chocolate, mocha, deep latte: warm browns are named as the lead shade across every forecast. They work as the softer alternative to black — the same depth without the hardness, and wearable on light and dark skin tones alike.
In practice that is a generous call: brown forgives regrowth at the cuticle far better than a true black, and still reads as worn rather than grown out in week three.
Red stays, but goes darker
Instead of a signal red, the season runs towards wine: bordeaux, merlot, cranberry, claret. Glossy rather than matte — the high-shine finish is part of the trend, not merely the default setting.
Plum sits beside it in almost every list, and it is the shade that carries the transition from autumn into winter most quietly.
Metallics return — as copper
For autumn, copper is named as the metallic that displaces silver and gold this season. Alongside it comes the velvet or cat-eye effect built on magnetic pigments, which shifts its depth with the angle of the light — an effect that photographs considerably worse than it looks in person.

The counter-trend: sheer grey
Against all that depth stands a conspicuously restrained counterpoint: a translucent grey through which your own nail stays visible. It is the fresher answer to the milky whites of recent years.
